Who are you?

We’re the Committee for Full Enjoyment, an affinity group based in San Francisco that is involved in various subversive and creative activities, including but not limited to Critical Mass.

What is Critical Mass?

Critical Mass is a grassroots bike event wherein bicyclists organize themselves and collectively occupy the streets in a fun, celebratory reclamation of public space.

Critical Mass began in September of 1992 in San Francisco, and has since spread to over 200 cities worldwide.
You can find more history and many examples of flyers and other historical documents we have produced under the Stuff heading.

Why make this website?

We realized the San Francisco Critical Mass was under-represented on the web, and we wanted to provide people with an easy to find and use resource. We also wanted to promote the 10th Anniversary of Critical Mass in September of 2002. Now it's been 5 more years!

Why are there no links on your site?

We don’t want to spend time updating links all the time – keeping track of all the hundreds of contacts around the world seemed tiring, and in any case has been done well by others. Try CriticalMassRides.info or www.critical-mass.org, or simply do a search for "Critical Mass".

Are you in charge of Critical Mass?

No! Well… Yes! Critical Mass functions on a decentralized basis, with no leaders, central planning, or corporate sponsorship. There is no one in charge on Critical Mass – which is really a way of saying that everyone is in charge!

That said, we plead guilty to having played a crucial role in helping create and maintain Critical Mass over the years. Several of our members are founders of Critical Mass and have created flyers, invented tactics, planned strategies, and otherwise helped organize the ride in an organic, participatory, non-coercive manner.

What are your politics?

We are a diverse bunch, and difficult to pin down. In general, we eschew labels, but when pressed most of us gladly embrace the term "radical" – as in "to the root". We’re for a transformation of social relations and the re-organization of modern life around principles of solidarity, freedom and mutual aid. We’re for creative solutions to contemporary problems that simultaneously build community and point the way to a better future.

Can we see what other projects you've done?

Certainly! Some links and info on a few individual members follows:

Co-workers Chris Carlsson and Jim Swanson were some of the premier members of the radical magazine Processed World -- a ground-breaking underground publication most famous for its frank discussions of "work" and how to avoid it. (Several others in the CFFE family were involved in this project, which was really the nucleus for many other initiatives.)

Chris & Jim & many others also worked on Shaping San Francisco, an ambitious multimedia history project:
